Hiring a Fencing Contractor

When you decide it’s the time to build a fence in your yard, it is important you choose the right contractor to get the job done.

To begin, create a list of several contractors and compare services and pricing. You should look for the following qualities in a contractor:

  • Knowledgeable. A fencing contractor should understand the different fencing options and be able to help you in deciding which is best for you. He should also be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of each type (wood, concrete, plastic, chain link).
  • Experienced. Ask about the contractor’s experience. The more experience he or she has, the job will be more satisfactory.
  • Licensed. DO NOT hire an unlicensed contractor to save money!
  • Insured. It is vital that the contractor has proper insurance. Otherwise, were something to happen during the job, you may be held responsible. It is also best if the contractor carries worker’s compensation to protect its employees.
  • Prompt. A good contractor should be on time for a set appointment. If he or she is late, it may be a sign of work ethic.
  • Listens and communicates effectively. Explain your needs and make sure the contractor understands them, so the fence is placed exactly the way you want.
  • Provides a warranty or guarantee. Fencing contractors have different guarantees and warranties for services. Find out what would happen if you are not pleased with the work, and if there are any exclusions.

Other considerations to make:

  • Make sure you understand the exact process for constructing the fence before work begins.
  • Who will be working on your property? Will there be a supervisor on site?
  • Ask about the timing of installation – when will it start, how long it will take, etc.
  • Find out if any specific permits are required in your area, as well as if there are any limitations on fences built in the community.
  • Make sure every aspect of the project is written in a contract – what type of fence you have commissioned, its dimensions, and its exact location to ensure it doesn’t cross any property lines. The more you cover in the contract, the less likely you will encounter problems. Most contractors have pre-written contracts with fine print. Be sure to read every word and ask any and all questions before signing.

With over 20 years of combined experience, you know you can trust Straight Line Fence for your next fence project.
