Fall Fence Maintenance

Now that fall is here, we must face the fact that winter is not far behind. Before snow, wind and ice hit and take their toll on your fence, make sure it is ready.

STEP 1: WATERPROOF

A wood fence will need to be waterproofed regularly to protect it from excess moisture from snow and ice that can cause mildew or rotting. You can find waterproof stains and sealants at home improvement stores.

STEP 2: REMOVE DEBRIS

Leaves, sticks and other debris can build up around fence posts. These objects can trap moisture, so raking and removing them will help the ground dry faster when snow falls. In addition, keep the fence clear of debris on top or in between posts.

STEP 3: INSPECT FOR HAZARDS

Is there a low hanging branch right above the fence? Heavy snow and strong winds can cause this or other potentially hazardous objects to fall onto the fence and damage it. Address this before it happens!

STEP 4: CHECK FOR EXISTING DAMAGE

Check the fence for any existing rot, peeling paint, loose screws or other issues and have them fixed or repaired as soon as possible. Winter may temporarily cover this damage, but it will only make it worse in the long run.

STEP 5: ASK FOR HELP

If you are unable to perform maintenance on your own, don’t hesitate to call for the assistance of a professional fencing company.
